Grant Process

Step 1: Inquiries

The Schusterman Foundation – Israel does not accept unsolicited requests. To make initial contact please submit a Letter of Intent, no longer than a page, outlining your funding request. The request should be sent by e-mail: to: info@schusterman.org.il.

Only those whose inquiries have been approved by a staff member of SFI will be asked to submit an official grant proposal and proceed to Step 2.

 Step 2: Grant Proposal check-list

Once you are asked to submit an official grant proposal please include the following:

1. Narrative

Your narrative should include all of the following and be limited to four pages or less.
  • A description of your organization.
  • A description of the problem or need your proposed project will address.
  • A description of the methodology or activities you intend to use to reach your objectives, along with a brief timeline for expected activities. Why were these activities selected as the best way to proceed?
  • A list, if applicable, of other organizations/programs that are addressing the same need/problem, and how your organization’s approach differs.
  • A description of how much is being requested from SFI and how these funds will be used (e.g. to support the salary of a particular worker, to provide scholarships for x students, etc.).
  • A description of the specific outcomes that will result from your project. When possible, please include any quantifiable results and quantifiable impact.

2. Budget

Please provide an overall organizational budget and project budget (when applying for a project grant) for your current fiscal year and, if different, the fiscal year(s) covered by the grant. Both the organizational and project budgets should include projected expenses, by-line items, and projected income, by source. Please be sure to list each Foundation that significantly supports your organization and project, and the amount received to date or anticipated from each. If the project is successful, how will it be funded in succeeding years? Please be specific regarding any overhead costs associated with the project budget.  Generally, we view overhead as those costs as those elements of the budget that remain fixed and independent of the costs of the specific project(s).

If your organization is requesting at least $50,000 in support, please provide a projected quarterly cash-flow statement for your project.

For budgets presented in U.S. dollars, please site the exchange rate used in calculating the budget.

3. Certificate of Financial Accountability (Ishur Al Nihul Pinkasei Cheshbonot Takin).

4. Tax Deduction at Source Certificate (Ishur Le'Tzorech Nikuy Mas BaMakor).

5. Your organization's most recent certified independent audit (Ma'azan Bochan).

6. A list of names and professional affiliations of directors, trustees, and board officers, with an indication of which officer will provide the contract signature.

7. Complete contact information for the organization to which the payments will be directed.

 Step 3: Submitting the application

  • To create a RENEWAL application for a previous grant, click here
  • To return to an application in progress, click here.
*This online application form does not accept formatted text. Please do not use bullet points, bolded or underlined text, etc.

All applications must be submitted online. Once completed, they become the property of SFI. While we will not share them with other organizations, we cannot return them following our review.

Step 4: Proposal Review

Grant proposals are accepted on a rolling basis.
Receipt of your application will be acknowledged and a member of the program staff will contact you within 45 days of receiving your application to give a preliminary indication of our level of interest or a final decision concerning the grant request. SFI assures that all applications will receive a thorough and timely review, with a target of reaching a funding decision within 90 days. You will be advised regarding the progress of your request and, when appropriate, SFI staff may request more information, a meeting, a site visit, or an expanded proposal.

Step 5: Contractual Agreement

Once a proposal is approved for funding, the successful applicant receives a formal grant agreement with the terms of grant (TOG) that:
  • Establishes the purpose of our grant;
  • Outlines the reporting requirements; and
  • Establishes a schedule of payments.

Step 6: Program Implementation and Reporting

SFI's TOG documents ordinarily include specific evaluation and outcome questions for grant recipients’ preparation of periodic reports. A standard grant will require regular status reports, typically on a semi-annual basis. Upon completion of the grant period, all grant recipients must submit a closing report, including a thorough summary and evaluation of the program or of the year(s) covered by the grant.
Please contact your SFI program staff member or Sharon Robinson, Office Manager, if you need clarification related to the reporting for your grant.

Step 7: Grant Renewal Option

All successful applicants seeking a second or third year of funding should submit a Grant Renewal Application at least sixty days in advance of the proposed funding period. Prior years' performance and reports will play a major role in determining whether a given grant will be renewed.
If your proposal is denied

The Foundation receives many grant proposals for worthwhile projects. A denial is not necessarily a reflection of the quality of the grant request or applicant organization.

The Schusterman Foundation – Israel (SFI) was created by the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation (CLSFF) to help strengthen the fabric of Israeli society by providing funding, technical assistance and leadership for new and existing initiatives.
